10 DIY Backpacks Your Child Will Love

August 26, 2021 by AllFreeSewing

I’m pretty young, but even I can tell that the prices of school supplies keep dramatically inflating. The things that actually last, you will pay an arm and a leg for, while the 50¢ items barely last a semester. They do their job, but I don’t like to go through multiple notebooks in a school year, let alone having to worry about if the cover is being torn up. I like my supplies neat, organized, and put together. I refuse to have to search for something. That’s why I don’t mind paying the extra money for a plastic cover and more pages—so that I don’t have to worry about it, and I end up using it for another class. But backpacks? Forget about it. I’ve had the same backpack since my sophomore year of high school. It would have been freshman year, if the 20-pound history book I had to carry didn’t break my strap. Even with backpacks from siblings lying around, I still like to make DIY backpacks.

A+ DIY Backpacks

Now, most of these homemade backpacks are for kids, but there is always use for them, even outside of school. Tired of carrying around your homemade tote full of stuff at a theme park or museum? Make some of these easy diy drawstring bags and have the kids sling them around by themselves! Free up your arms, you deserve it. Kids’ school bags can easily get expensive. They grow. Their interests change. The bags themselves get damaged. Whatever the reason, you’re going to love making homemade school bags, since they can be washed, upcycled, and cost a fraction of the price of a store-bought backpack.

You don’t even have to make them for your kids. These easy diy bags are so cute and portable that they work great for anything on the go. I’m going to be graduating college in about five months, so I don’t even know what I will do with my backpack once I’m finished with it, but I know that I will always need DIY carrying-sacks and homemade pencil cases for my daily adventures. You can breathe a little more this August knowing that you’ve saved yourself so much money on just backpacks alone, while fishing for classroom supplies. But don’t get too comfortable! School is just around the corner and you don’t want to be caught off guard. There are plenty of back to school sewing projects that can be found to save you even more money, and you can personalize your child’s items.
