Quilting for a Cause: The AIDS Memorial Quilt

In the last 20 years, the research for treating and curing AIDS and HIV have come a long way. If you don’t know, AIDS stands for “acquired immunodeficiency syndrome,” which is a chronic disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that breaks down the immune system.

AIDS has been prevalent in popular culture with the debut of the play Rent (1993) and followed by the 2005 film of the same name. This disease has been featured in recent movies like Dallas Buyers Club (2013), Precious (2009), and The Hours (2002). Some celebrities who suffered and who are suffering from AIDS or are HIV positive include Freddie Mercury, Charlie Sheen, Rock Hudson, Magic Johnson, and Liberace.

There have been many stigmas and controversies surrounding AIDS/HIV because it is a sexually transmitted disease, but the support for those battling the disease and those grieving its victims is everywhere and it begins with some quilt blocks!

The Aids Memorial QuiltIn order to treat AIDS victims with the remembrance and recognition they deserve, the NAMES Project Foundation started the AIDS Memorial Quilt in 1987. The NAMES Project’s goal is to maintain the quilt with all of its healing powers. The Quilt, as of 2012, has over 8,000 blocks that are twelve feet square that can be seen at the various displays around the country. Can you imagine making a quilt this big?

If you know someone who has died of AIDS and want to contribute a panel you can do so at no cost because the foundation relies on donations. The AIDS Memorial Quilt is a great reason as to why quilting is so important. It has fought prejudice as well as raised awareness and funding for the fight against AIDS.
