December 13, 2014 by AllFreeSewing 170 Comments

Today is Day 6 of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway. You can enter each day to win the prize of the day! Contest rules and how to enter are below.

12 Days of Christmas

Today’s Project

On the sixth day of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, my true love gave to me …Christmas Row Houses Pattern from Quilt Woman!

quilt-woman-image

MATERIALS

  • ½ yd. background & backing fabric or two 15” squares or two fat quarters
  • 5” x 15” white snow fabric
  • 4” x 15” gray snow fabric
  • 4” x 15” sky fabric
  • Assorted scraps for houses
  • Two 2 ½” strips for binding (1/4 yd.)
  • 1 tiny button for each doorknob
  • White and red thread
  • 16” square of thin batting
  • Permanent fabric glue

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Sandwich 15” square backing right side down with batting on top of it and background 15” square right side up on top of that. Pin and stitch together around outside ¼” from edges.
  2. For sky and 2 bands of snow, cut the edges of each fabric into gentle curves. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Make your snow drifts as big as you want them! Place the 3 strips of fabric in a pleasing arrangement. Pin the gray piece in place first and stitch along the top edge about 3/16” from the edge of the fabric and along each side ¼” from the side edges right on top of the background stitching. Place the white snow band on top of the gray, lined up with the bottom edge of the background. Stitch around the bottom and side edges ¼” from the edges and stitch across the top 3/16” from the edge of the fabric. Do the same with the sky on the top.
  3. Trim the project to 15” square.
  4. From the assorted scraps, cut 5 houses, roofs, doors, and windows in random sizes. Cut the houses first about 2”-2 ½” x 2 ½”-3”. Then cut the roofs, doors, and windows to fit.
  5. Arrange the house pieces on the background first and tack in place in the centers where you will not be stitching with small dots of glue. Sew around each about 3/16” from the edges. Add the roofs in the same method, placing any that overlap on last. Now add the doors and windows.
  6. Add button door knobs with glue.
  7. Add binding as follows:
  • Sew 2 ½” strips together with diagonal seams.
    quiltwoman1
  • Fold binding strip lengthwise with wrong sides together as you sew it to quilt—do NOT press. Starting about 1/3 of the way down from first corner, match raw edges of binding to quilt edges. Using a ¼” seam, start sewing about 5″ from end of strip and stop ¼” before corner.
    quiltwoman2
  • Remove from machine and fold strip up forming a 45° angle. Next fold the strip back down and sew from edge to ¼” from next corner. Repeat until you are back on the first edge. Stop 5” before end on last edge.
    quiltwoman3
  • Overlap the ends of the binding strips and trim so they overlap by 2¼”. Unfold the ends of the binding strips. Right sides together, sew a diagonal seam.
    quiltwoman5
  • Fold binding over to back of quilt and sew either by hand or with invisible thread by machine.

5 yards of fabric is a lot of fabric, and that would make a lot of warm fidgety throws for the Altzheizmer patients, in care home, and give the care givers a much needed article to keep their patients occupied, if only for just a short time, and give these folks something to pass away their days.

I would include the following on the lap size throws: zippers, buttons with flaps, a pair of braids, a couple of pockets, buckle, a couple of ties/ribbons, a small cloth doll, small furry pet like a stuffed dog, or cat, bear – each in their own house/pocket doorway,, set of large snaps, leather string with 5 – 6 beads, ornaments that sparkle, anything they cannot hurt themselves with.

I love to give away my quilts and make someone else happy, even if just for the moment.,

What to make with 5 yards of fabric … hmmm, definitely a quilt. Depending on the fabrics, pattern and size I may need to add a tad more, but the yardage would be transformed into either a Diamond Daze, Ocean Breeze, or Christmas Joy quilt (or perhaps one of the 5 free patterns!) AND since we have an upcoming wedding in our family, it would be the perfect gift for a beautiful bride and groom tying their nuptials in June 2015! Thanks for the opportunity to win these gorgeous fabrics from New Holiday Reflections by EBI Fabrics (and the additional 5 Christmas patterns)! So greatly appreciated. Merry Christmas to you all!

I would take on the task of making my first quilt. My grandmother did all the traditional crafts, but quilting was especially educational because she was part of a collective of women who pieced quilts in Bucks County, PA. At the time, her house was in the area of Amish and Mennonites. We had no neighborsnear the farm, so this was the only time I saw my grandmother with her friends. Wonderful memories.

My 90-year-old mother is about to enter an assisted-living facility. She has always been very attuned to holiday celebration…as an elementary school teacher, as a mother, as grandmother and great-grandmother. The colors, the lights, and the family connections of Christmas have always equaled celebration. Though now unable to decorate a holiday home, or create the quilts she often bestowed on family members, she loves seeing and touching the tree decorations, the the table linens, and the quilts that I and my siblings use during this season. With 5 yards of new holiday fabric, I would create a Christmas quilt for my mother, for her to enjoy in her new home.

The one certain item to be made would be something to donate to a charity cause so that others could benefit from what I was lucky enough to receive. Some of the fabric would be used to create a raffle item to raise money at our next quilt show’

I just found an easy pattern for reusable shopping totes than I can use for gift bags for the gifts I have made for my family or even Christmas purses, from the purse patterns I have, made purses for this years gifts and a Christmas purse would be a nice extra. Think the reusable bags will make great extra gifts or just gifts for someone I want to remember this year. Have a stash of Christmas fabric from two quilts to add to the 5 yards so can make a variety of totes, purses or even may use the large guilt block idea from a tote pattern I purchased and made for my family last year. Have several ideas, is fun to think of pretty ways to use surprise fabric. I had a bunch of fabric given to me last summer I, fun to think of ways to use it in crafts, clothing or a quilts.
