Hello Everyone! My name is Katie and I blog over at Running with a Glue Gun. Today I’m going to be showing you how to make a super easy fabric camera strap!
A DIY camera strap is something that I have been wanting to make for quite a while. Partly because I have seen so many tutorials on the ”proper” way to make a camera strap. With that being said, some of the tutorials that I have seen, have been a little overly complicated. These tutorials (that I have seen) usually have to do with sewing your own camera strap from scratch.
In the effort to make things easier to understand, I thought it would be fun to share a simple 4 step tutorial on how to make your own camera strap! The camera strap that I’m making today is great for those who are new to sewing because it only involves a little bit of sewing and you have the option to sew by hand or on the sewing machine. Also, the sewing itself only involves a simple straight stitch and nothing more!
So if you want to learn how to make your own fabric camera strap, then keep reading below!
- Sewing Pins
- Lobster Clasp Swivel Hooks
- Jump Rings (optional)
- Sewing Machine (optional)
Before Getting Started:
For this project, I opted to sew everything by hand, but you don’t have to. If you feel more comfortable using your sewing machine, by all means, sew away!
Step 1: Cut out a strip of fabric that is 55 inches by 4 inches.
Step 2: Fold your strip of fabric in half with the right-sides together. Then pin your fabric together and sew a straight line down the side with the raw edges. Once you’re done sewing, flip your strip of fabric right-side out and set it to the side.
Step 3: Grab your felt and cut out two pieces which resemble the above shape. The size of my felt pieces ended up being 4 inches by 2 inches.
Step 4: Take one of your felt pieces and slide on one of your lobster clasp swivel hooks or jump rings (depending on your camera). Then grab your fabric strip and sandwich it inside your felt piece. Finally, sew around all four edges of your felt piece. When you’re done with this step, repeat it on the other side of your fabric strip.
Once you are completely done, you’re ready to attach your new camera strap to your camera!
Instant camera makeover!
I decided to go with this galaxy fabric because I thought it would look nice with my black camera. Honestly, picking out your fabric is really half the fun of this DIY! My tip in regards to fabric for this project is to keep an eye out on the clearance section in the fabric area of your craft store. This is because you can find a great deal on some pretty fabric, which could have cost you more at another time. The galaxy fabric I used in this project, I found in the clearance section!
If you made this camera strap, what patterned fabric would you use?
