Carolyn Wainscott here, from Carolyn’s Canvas! The sewing room of my dreams is light and bright, neat and organized, pretty and pleasant to the eye. Well, I can dream, can’t I? It’s a work in progress right now. My beads were sorted into one of those small parts cabinets I got at Harbor Freight several weeks ago with tools and other supplies remaining in a small 3 drawer cabinet. Threads are on a wheeled cart, fabrics on shelves but nothing is anywhere near my ideal work space.
I like to see what I have and I have been eyeing drawer pulls/knobs at Hobby Lobby for a while wondering what could be done with them. There are so many unique ones but nothing came to mind till I thought of using them as toppers for my canning jars that I have in abundance since I used to can a lot-I could see my stuff in those-yessiree-so off I went with coupon in hand to get a couple to try for my latest brainstorm.
I chose a beautiful red, ceramic rose drawer pull and as I was looking at another with a large porcelain bead the thought of my beads at home came to mind. Why couldn’t I use those and create my own and then there are my buttons so the quick, easy project evolved into another of my crafts gone wild.
The original [hour at the most] canning jar organizers with drawer pull toppers became an all day venture by the time I pulled out wire, wire cutters, buttons, hot glue gun, beads [at least I knew right where they were in their new parts drawers], canning jars, lids & rings and anything else I could think I would use.
My son, Jeff, drilled center holes in the lids for the drawer pulls and for a large wood bead that wanted to be embellished with lace and buttons which were hot glued on, then a hole drilled into the bottom for a screw. Two holes were drilled into the rest of the lids for the wire that secured the beads and buttons for those toppers and circles of fabric cut to cover the lids.
With lids prepared, I had a blast mixing and matching buttons and beads to create one of a kind toppers for those canning jars that are going to be in that bright, organized, pretty sewing room one day, hopefully soon. For now, they will just have to sit among the other ordinary organizers and containers.
As you can see, I got rather carried away!
The stacked button topper is perfect for the vintage wood spools that belonged to my mother-in-law, the fancy ceramic rose drawer pull and stacked bead topper sit on some of my beads and garlands, and the large wooden bead with lace and buttons looks great on my button collection.
The large ceramic drawer pull is what started this whole thought process.
Then there is this large container that originally held pretzels that now loves holding some of my laces and is topped by one of my miniature dolls that was picked up at a yard sale along with other dolls.
Here is my video tutorial for putting the toppers together:

I absolutely love this idea especially using little trinkets for the tops! Now I know what to do with all my little decoratives! Thank you so so much!
Such a great idea. A wonderful way to use the left over beads from another project. It will also cut down on the amount of fabric scraps I have. Way to go. Thanks for the idea.
