The Double Wedding Ring Quilt Block

February 12, 2020 by Carolyn 1 Comment

It’s hard to believe I designed the original Double Ring Wedding Quilt almost 20 years ago for my brother and sister-in-law’s 50th wedding anniversary. It was a queen-size whole cloth quilt. When Seams And Scissors’ editor asked me for a wedding quilt, I decreased the size down to 14 1/2″ to be more usable for you quilters here at Seams. Now, it is The Double Ring Wedding Quilt Block, and it’s versatile enough to be used for many different projects, from pillows to any size quilt or wallhanging, by creating multiple blocks. It is still a whole cloth for hand or machine quilting.

Blocks can be sewn together into a quilt top after 1.) marking each to be quilted traditionally or 2.) quilted individually, then sewn together. If you would like to know more about this “quilt as you go method,” please let us know in our comment section.

Here is a 42″ x 28″ six block wall hanging:

To use The Double Ring Wedding Quilt Block download and print the pattern:

Mark your fabrics. I used a #2 pencil, but whatever you use, be sure to mark your fabrics very lightly. There are marking pens that can be dabbed away with a damp cloth and one that disappears in 24 hours. There is no way this old gal marks with a 24 hour pencil—I might get pulled away from quilting and my pattern disappears. I am fond of the one that disappears with a damp cloth, however.

Pin baste top, batting, and backing for quilting.

Machine or hand quilt.

Included in the pattern are templates to configure with monogramming, if you want. Just choose a font you like from your computer or stencil. I liked the chunky block lettering because it was easy to free motion quilt around.

The Double Ring Wedding Quilt Block can be customized with names and dates for weddings and anniversaries. The original Double Ring Quilt had the 50 years in the center oval. This will be a knock-out remembrance even though it is fairly simple to do.

Happy Quilting!
