Snowy Style: Free Dress Patterns for Winter

December 15, 2017 by Seams and Scissors 3 Comments

I definitely could define my style as being a bit on the feminine side. Frills, lace, florals – you name it, I’ve probably worn it at some point this week. So I’m always bummed out each year when winter rolls around and suddenly it’s too cold to wear anything except the chunkiest sweater you can find and a giant scarf – cozy is great, but sometimes I still want to dress up a little, and I’m usually in denial about the versatility of my sundresses until I learn the hard way that it’s just too darn cold for them.

Winter doesn’t mean that you have to bid the dress adieu until March, however. Dresses can be warm and stylish at the same time, especially with a few key accessories such as sweater tights or leggings! I’ve found 14 of our best free dress patterns that would look right at home in the middle of winter. Work them up and wear them out – your friends will be jealous of your cold-weather chic!

I admit to upcycling cotton knit fitted sheets. I cut the elastic hems from around the edges (this means I always have elastic in stock for trousers and skirts plus if unpicked carefully I have a plentiful supply of narrow bias which I use for piping on tops and dresses) and using the remaining fabric cut out a simple maxi dress, usually based on a shift dress, which I then wear like an old fashioned chemise underneath dresses or tops. This means that a lightweight cotton dress or top instantly becomes warm enough to wear in cold weather, plus wearing a ‘chemise’ beneath means that the top or dress also looks different. I manage to have a relatively small wardrobe of clothing and each season has a couple of ‘chemises’ in different colours and weights (and styles, summer ones generally have circular skirts but all are maxi) so that no matter what the weather turns out like that year I can wear my favourite clothing all year round.
