Free Quilt Pattern: Happy Garden Bargello from Kona Bay Fabrics

Hey there, quilters! Today we have a free, full quilt pattern just for you, courtesy of our friends over at Kona Bay Fabrics! Kona Bay offers gorgeous wholesale fabrics to quilting stores across the United States. Each of their designs is packed with color, texture, and character, and their themed collections make it so easy to make a cohesive quilt no matter what your tastes in patterns are. This quilt is called the Happy Garden Bargello, and it uses fabrics from their Happy Garden fabric collection (although of course, you can use whatever fabrics you have on hand!) Have a blast working up this intricate quilt pattern, available in two colorways – Sunshine (the warm-toned quilt) and Spring (the bluer quilt).

Let’s Begin
Before you begin read all instructions. Referring to project Cutting Chart, cut First Cuts strips as indicated in chart, then cut smaller pieces listed under Next Cuts from these strips. Use an Accurate Seam Allowances and Assembly Line Method to construct this quilt. Use a 1/4″-wide seam allowance throughout this project. Press seams in direction of arrows as indicated in each diagram.

Making the Quilt
This quilt uses a strip piecing method. After strips are sewn together into a strip set they are cut into segments, then segments are sewn together to make units and blocks.

1. Sew together lengthwise one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric F strip, one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric H strip, and one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric E strip as shown. Press. Make four strip sets. Cut strip sets into sixty-four 2 1/2″-wide segments. Label eight segments Unit 8.

Happy Garden Bargello Quilt Pattern2. Sew together lengthwise one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric H strip, ine 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric E strip, and one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric J strip as shown. Press. Make two stip sets. Cut strip sets into twenty-eight 2 1/2″-wide segments.

Happy Garden Bargello Quilt Pattern3. Sew one segment from step 2 between two segments from step 1 as shown. Make twenty-eight of these and label them Unit 1.

Happy Garden Bargello Quilt Pattern4. Sew together lengthwise one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric D strip, one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric G strip, and one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric B strip as shown. Press. Make four strip sets. Cut strip sets into sixty-four 2 1/2″-wide segments. Label sixteen segments Unit 7.

Happy Garden Bargello Quilt Pattern7. Sew together lengthwise one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric D strip between two 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric C strips as shown. Press. Cut one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric C strip and one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric D strip in half to measure 2 1/2″ x 21″ strips. Sew together lengthwise one 2 1/2″ x 21″ Fabric D strip between two 2 1/2″ x 21″ Fabric C strips. Press. Cut strip sets into nineteen 2 1/2″-wide segments. Label three segments Unit 10.

Happy Garden Bargello Quilt Pattern10. Sew together lengthwise one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric I strip between two 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric C strips as shown. Press. Cut strip sets into twelve 2 1/2″-wide segments.

Cut one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric F strip and one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric I strip in half to measure 2 1/2″ x 21″ strips. Sew together lengthwise one 2 1/2″ x 21″ Fabric F strip between two 2 1/2″ x 21″ Fabric I strips. Press. Cut strip sets into twenty 2 1/2″-wide segments. Label eight segments Unit 9.

Happy Garden Bargello Quilt Pattern19. Sew together lengthwise one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric C strip to one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric I strip as shown. Press. Make two. Using the remainder 2 1/2″ x approximately 25″ Fabric C strip, sew this strip and one 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric I strip. Press. Cut strip sets into forty 2 1/2″-wide segments as shown and label these Unit 11.

1. Sew one Unit 11 to one Unit 5 as shown. Press. Sew one Unit 6 to one Unit 11. Press. Sew these units to one Unit 8 as shown. Press. Make four and label Block 1.

Refer to diagram below for steps 1-2.

1. Arrange and sew together one Block 1, four of Block 2, three of Block 3, three of Block 5, and one of Block 6 as shown. Press. Make four.

2. Arrange and sew together eight of Unit 7, four 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ Fabric A pieces, and three 2 1/2″ Fabric C squares as shown. Press. Make two.

3. Referring to the diagram below, arrange and sew together two 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ Fabric J pieces, eight of Unit 1, four of Unit 9, and three 6 1/2″ Fabric A squares. Press. Make two.

4. Referring to the diagram below, arrange and sew together eight of Block 2, four 6 1/2″ Fabric J and three of Unit 10. Press.

5. Referring to the layout of the quilt, arrange and sew rows from steps 1-4 together as shown. Press.

Adding the Borders
1. Sew 2 1/2″ x 42″ Fabric F strips end-to-end to make one continuous 2 1/2″-wide Fabric F strip. Press. Measure quilt from side to side. Cut two 2 1/2″-wide strips to this measurement. Sew to top and bottom of quilt. Press seams toward border.

2. Measure quilt through center from top to bottom, including borders just added. Cut two 2 1/2″-wide Fabric F strips to that measurement. Sew to sides of quilt and press.

3. Refer to steps 1 and 2 to join, measure, trip, and sew 8 1/2″-wide Fabric A strips to top, bottom, and sides of quilt. Press.

Finishing the Quilt
1. Cut backing fabric piece into three equal pieces. Sew pieces together to make one 90″ x 120″ approximate backing piece. Press and trim backing to measure 90″ x 106″.

2. Press backing and quilt top trimming all excess threads. Layer and baste backing, batting, and quilt top together. Hand or machine quilt as desired. Bind quilt as desired.
