Sewing with Bias Tape Part 1: How to Make Bias Tape

Bias tape has a multitude of uses. Fact: I LOVE bias tape! But store bought tape can have its limitations in terms of colour, quality and width. This won’t be a problem once you’ve learned how to make bias tape of your own, though. You’ll create bias binding quickly and easily to match perfectly with baby bibs, lightweight sweaters, quilting projects, and more! Whether you use it as binding, facing, or piping, custom made bias lends a touch of quality to your sewing in a way that it’s “off the peg” cousin can’t quite manage.

Step 1:

Start with a bias strip the right width for your bias maker. (Want an easy way to
make bias strips? See here). With the strip RS down/WS facing up, insert one end of the
strip into the widest end of the bias gadget ensuring the fabric strip is as central as
possible…..

Step 2:

Gradually feed the fabric strip along . I find it helps to use something pointy to
help it along…

Step 3:

Feed it through until juuuuust a teeny bit pops out the end of your bias maker

Step 4:

Press the tip of the strip as it pokes through…

Step 5:

Take hold of the handle of the gadget and gently slide it along the fabric strip
about a centimeter at a time, pressing as you go

Step 6:

Keep going all the way to the end of the strip. Slide the gadget along the strip a
centimeter then press. Slide it along another centimeter then press, and so on; until you’ve
gone the length of your bias strip…

…and there you have it…nice neat bias tape ready to use on your next sewing project 🙂

You want a bias tape maker of your own now, don’t you?

Awesome I just got the singer 3 pack collectable tin and wasn’t 100% sure how to use it. Now I know thanks. I wish I knew how wide of fabric to use or is it cut and guess.

You cut your fabric on the bias twice as wide as the tape you are making. Example if you are making 1″ wide tape cut the fabric 2″ wide. The fabric is folded over 1/2 of the width on each side.

Thanks ! I have 3 “Braid Aids” that fold fabric while I braid. You have just given me a second use for them. Wonder why I hadn’t thought of it myself? My homemade binding looks terrible.

I have started making my own bias tape. Really works. I leave about an inch and a half of tape at the end of the material. the masking tape sticks to the table making it easy to cut. I also spray starch before putting the material in the bias tool .Love this site.
