Today’s Project
On the fifth day of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, my true love gave to me …“Jingle” Holiday Wall Decor from Primitive Quilts and Projects!
MATERIALS
- 5″ x 8″ red felted wool for ornaments and letters
- 5″ x 8″ green felted wool for ornaments and letters
- 3″ square gray felted wool for ornament tops
- Fat quarter black cotton for appliqué background
- Sulky® 12-weight cotton thread in 1169, 1295, 1271
- Valdani 100% Colorfast hand-dyed No. 12 perle cotton in P2 and P12
- 4½” x 24″ double-stick fusible web
- Frame with 8″ x 16″ opening
- Size 24 chenille needle
- White Clover marking pen
- 2½” circle template (optional)
CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS
Templates in the template insert have already been reversed and do not include a seam allowance. Because felted wool does not fray, there is no need to turn under the edges of the appliqué pieces. Click here download Jingle Holiday Decor templates.
- Trace six circles, six ornament tops, and “JINGLE” letters onto the fusible web, then cut them out just
outside of the drawn lines. - Place three fusible ornament shapes on the red wool and three on the green wool. Leave the fusible paper on the back of the ornament shapes.
- Place the fusible “J”, “N”, “L” shapes on the green wool and the “I”, “G”, “E” shapes on the red wool.
- Using steam, press the fusible shapes from steps 2 and 3 to the wool, then cut them out on the drawn lines.
SEWING INSTRUCTIONS
Finished size: 8″ x 16″ (not including frame)
- Press the black cotton fabric.
- Lay the frame, face down, on the black cotton fabric. Using the white Clover marking pen, trace around the opening of the frame. You will keep the design layout within this space.
- Referring to the project photo on page 44 for placement, lay out the ornaments and place the wool letter shapes on the appropriate ornaments. Using steam, press those elements in place.
- Referring to the project photo for placement, lay out the six ornaments and ornament tops on the black cotton fabric. Using steam, press those elements in place.
- Using a blanket stitch, sew the wool shapes in place with coordinating colors of Sulky® threads 1169 and 1271. Click here for Blanket Stitch illustration.
- Referring to the project photo for placement and using the white Clover marking pen, draw the lines for the evergreen branch and pine needles. Using a stem stitch, sew the evergreen branch in place with Valdani P12 thread. Click here for Stem Stitch illustration.
- Using a straight stitch, sew the pine needles in place with Valdani P2 thread.
- Referring to the project photo for placement and using the white Clover marking pen, draw the ornament loop and hanging wire for each ornament. Using a stem stitch, sew those elements in place with Sulky® 1295 thread.
- Referring to the project photo for placement, sew French knots with Sulky® 1169 thread to make the red berries. Click here for French Knot illustration.
- Frame and enjoy.

I have made so many quilts, I love it. Since my first issue of Primitive Quilts, I have made several quilts using wool applique and have fallen in love with the process. Can’t wait for the next issue to see the wonderful projects they have. I had never worked with wool before and it is a must try for people, it is such a great medium to work with. I can’t say enough about it.

This past year I made 2 T-shirt quilts for my daughters using their soccer stuff from high school. I also made a 16-Suduko cat quilt for my daughter and SIL. I’ve also made some small projects. I’m planning some new projects for our renovated home that hopefully will be completed in 6 months or less. Wish me luck! (on the remodel,of course).

Yes! I have just turned 50 and have made two quilts now and I’m planning on making lots more but deciding which pattern to do next is so difficult as there are so many beautiful patterns out there. I love the free motion quilting and need loads of practice so lots of projects are needed for the experience.

I have never made a quilt. I took a class once in the 1990’s but have never finished it! I do have quilts from my grandmother. I took notes of stories she told me about the items she used in the quilts. They were poor so she used my grandfather’s old flannel shirts and other clothing to make them.

Yes, I’ve made many quilts since the 1970s. I have done applique, piecing as well as dyeing, painting and stamping my fabric for original fiber art wall hangings.
I have not attemptd a quilt but our church has a quilting group and they are close to convincing me to join.
I make small quilts as gifts for babies and nursing home residents. I don’t have a long arm machine to achieve the top quilting designs, so I mainly stitch-in-the-ditch on projects. I love piece work and do a lot of serging of 1- 1&1/2″ pieces together so they won’t come apart. The project above for “Jingle” Holiday Wall Decor is very well done and works great with primitive and country/chic decor. Love it!
I also read that the ‘orange’ color in a mug makes the hot chocolate/coffee better, and of course, Marsala is the big color to use in 2015.

No, I have never made a quilt. They are absolutely beautiful but I don’t think I could dedicate that much time on one project. I had the privilege of visiting an Amish farm in Lancaster and they had numerous quilts on display. All I can say is they are amazing.
I have made many quilts. Mostly for family members. One for one daughter, two for another daughter, one for each of my five grandkids. One as a workshop with the quilting friends , one that was a contest I entered. So far they have all been for a specific reason, Next my husband says I have to make one for us! Also I now try free motion quilting myself.
