It’s super fun to decorate for Halloween. You have so many options, from cute-spooky to super-scary. This adorable hand-sewn black cat wall hanging project by Katie King of Running With A Glue Gun definitely falls into the cute category!
Materials:
- Pattern (size to scale)
- 1 Piece of Stiff Black Felt
- 1 Piece of Orange Felt
- Sewing Needle
- Black Thread
- Orange Thread
- White Embroidery Thread
- Black Yarn
- Pom-Pom Maker
- Dowel Rod + Dowel Rod Caps (optional)
- Orange Paint
- Foam Brush
- E6000 Glue
- Pencil
- Scissors
Before Getting Started:
This is a project that is designed to be sewed by hand. Even though we’re not sewing that much, the sewing that is done would be difficult to complete on the sewing machine. I promise you that the sewing is super easy and is something you can do while watching TV!
Instructions:
Step 1: Grab your black felt, orange felt and pattern. Then trace around each pattern piece onto your felt and cut them out. When you’re done, you should have a black cat, an orange hat, an orange bow, an orange strip (middle of the bow) and three black strips (stripes on hat).
Step 2: Grab your three black strips and sew them onto your orange hat. Then sew a whip stitch (using black thread) around the entire hat.
Step 3: Now grab your black cat and sew your orange striped hat, onto the cat’s head.
Step 4: Grab your orange strip and wrap it around the middle of your bow. Then sew an x in the middle by using your orange thread. Now grab your black cat and sew the bow onto the bottom of the cat’s chin.
Step 5: Using white embroidery thread, sew on a little nose and whiskers onto you black cat’s face.
Step 6: Use your pom-pom maker make a pom-pom for your cat’s hat. However, make sure you leave about a 12 inch tail of yarn, so we can connect it to our dowel rod later.
Step 7: Sew your pom-pom onto the top of your black cat’s hat.
Repeat steps 1-7 to make two more cats for your dowel rod.
Step 8: Paint your dowel rod and dowel rod caps. Once your dowel rod and dowel rod caps are dry, glue the dowel rod caps to the ends of your dowel rod.
Step 9: Tie all your cats onto your dowel rod by using the string that we left, which was connected to the pom-pom. Then cut a piece of yarn that is about 12 inches and tie each end to your dowel rod.
When you’ve finished tying the yarn, you’re ready to hang your new Halloween Black Cat Wall Hanging!

I am most definitely happier when I can sew on my machine. I do agree that sewing by hand can be therapeutic, but the hum of my sewing machine is too!
I love sewing by hand – applique and embroidery. It’s so relaxing. But I do enjoy sewing by machine too.
the whir of a sewing machine makes me a little manic, so I definitely am more relaxed when hand sewing.
Just a thought, when I saw this project, I immediately thought this would be a great crafts for the 8yo to help the younger boys put together. with glue instead of stitching, of course. the whiskers would be a quick intro to embroidery.
the older boy doesn’t like to do “girl stuff”, but when I told him that my father was required to learn to sew in the Army (WWII), because soldiers didn’t have their mommies to sew back their loose buttons & they had to darn their own socks because there weren’t stores in the theaters to buy new ones, he got on board. Not eagerly, but he’s there.
Definitely machine, I’ll do buttons by hand, but I much prefer using my machine.
Machine is my favorite way to sew, I’d do everything by machine if I could!
This is a super cute easy pattern and would be great as an activity for kids!
machine, learning to sew by hand is slow and painful!
I definitely prefer sewing on the machine than by hand, but this wall hanging is so cute!
I like both, and dislike both in different ways. I prefer hand hemming to machine hemming. But straight stitching by machine is so nice.
Mostly I sew by machine but some things are just hand only like yo-yos.
The first thing I ever sewed was a dress, entirely by hand. I prefer machine sewing. much faster. But I do still prefer to match patterns, stripes and plaids with hand basting.
Definitely by machine
I will take sewing by machine any day. I enjoy sewing but also want to see my projects completed in a timely manner.
I prefer to sew by machine to get things done quickly and then on to the next project. Thanks!
I prefer sewing by machine, but occasionally it is restful to do a bit of hand stitching.
I prefer sewing by machine because hand sewing makes my hand cramp
Depends on the project, but I prefer sewing with a machine. Smaller craft items, I like to hand sew.
I have returned to sewing after not doing it for about 25 years I do prefer the machine because of my carpal tunnel and arthritis there are so many things to make and just never enough time! I’ m trying to remember why I stopped in the first place ,I love to create things I make my own patterns and have all kinds of visions in my head.
I love sewing by machine – I can get more things done! Thanks for the chance to win!
It depends on what mood I’m in, but I usually prefer sewing by machine because it’s so much more efficient!
I started off sewing by hand and when I got a sewing machine, it was so much quicker and easier for the most part. I have completed and accomplished so much more with my sewing machine.
I love using my machine and trying out different stitches for projects. Hand sewing is fun and can travel with you on trips.
I used to prefer hand sewing, but now I rely on my machine too much. Jadahlgr at Yahoo dot Com
By hand mostly because I can carry on a conversation with another person and hand sew at the same time…the machine takes full concentration or your likely to sew a finger into whatever your sewing!
