Every September, AllFreeSewing joins Sewing.org and other sewists to celebrate National Sewing Month. For 2018 we had at least one new page to share each day. This year not only had brand new free patterns, tutorials, pages with tips, tricks, and techniques for sewing, and new collections, but we also did a few Facebook Live videos to supplement our #NationalSewingMonth pages.
National Sewing Month 2018
Since there were so many amazing things shared this year, we thought we’d go through and highlight some of our favorite pages from this September’s celebration. We’ll share our favorite one or two pages from each week to help you decide which pages to view first!
Week 1 – Intro Week
We can’t deny that the most exciting intro to National Sewing Month was the announcement of our grand prize giveaway. This year the grand prize was a Janome M7200 Supreme Sewing Machine. It made us AllFreeSewing editors wish we could enter!
Week 2 – Tips and Tricks Week
Tips and Tricks week had a lot of fascinating pages. Our favorite tutorial came from Rebecca at Purple and Lime. She wrote a guide on how to sew on sequins and it was chock full of all you need to know. With this page, you’ll learn how to sew individual sequins, sequin fabric, trim, and more.
Another favorite is a page that anyone who wants to learn about sewing or any sewist who has a thirst for knowledge should read. Our page, 75+ Sewing Questions Answered: Ultimate FAQs Guide, really has it all. You’ll find the most basic beginner questions but also complex technique questions answered.
Week 3 – Christmas Week
Christmas week was so great this year that we are having such a difficult time narrowing down our two faves. First off, we had two amazing Facebook Live videos. One was from Carolina Moore from 30 Minute Crafts. She made the cutest quilted gift card holders. Jenny also made sock snowmen live to go with this project.
We also had a guide for planning sewing projects for Christmas and AllFreeSewing editor Krista’s favorite project, Vintage Christmas Wreath Beaded & Embroidered Ornaments.
Week 4 – Refashioning Week
Our friend and sewing genius Mary Beth Temple created a few awesome videos with written tutorials that we shared during refashion week. We think that her how-to, Sew Easy Men’s Shirt to Women’s Shirt Refashion (Video Tutorial), is such a helpful technique to know.
We also had her help for explaining all the different ways a person can refashion their outfit with a scarf. How to Tie a Long Scarf: 15 Fabulous Formations has so much information plus a free infographic with illustrations of the most popular styles.
Week 5 – Printables Week
We also had two different stuffed animal patterns/tutorials we loved sharing! First off, Mary Beth returned with the cutest owl plushie ever. She made a video, too. Krista created printable templates and wrote the tutorial for making felt monsters. The monsters are kid-friendly sewing projects as well, which means that the whole family can get together to create.
Don’t worry, you can check out our full line-up anytime here or shared below. We’re sure you’ll find several amazing projects and helpful guides.
