Today is Day 2 of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway. You can enter each day to win the prize of the day! Contest rules and how to enter are below.
Today’s Project
On the second day of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, my true love gave to me … a Prairie Point Pinecone Ornament from the American Quilter’s Society!
MATERIALS
- 2 1/2 ” diameter Styrofoam® ball
- Fabric scraps (about 1/8 yard total)
Glue, hot glue, or straight pins
- Decorative cord for hanging
INSTRUCTIONS
- Cut 1 1/4 ” squares from the fabric scraps. We used 93 for our sample ornament, but you may need more or less. Set one square aside.
- Fold a square in half on the diagonal, wrong sides together, and press. Fold the resulting triangle in half again and press (like making a prairie point). Repeat for all the squares. See figure 1.
- Start by attaching the unfolded square to the ball. This is the center bottom. See figure 2.
- Refer to figure 3 and begin attaching the prairie points, pointing toward the center bottom, overlapping the raw edges of the first square.
- Continue to add rows of prairie points as shown in figure 4. As you approach the horizon, the points will spread out and automatically flare as you reach the top of the ball. See figures 5 and 6.
- When you reach the top of the ball, cut a scrap of fabric that will cover the raw edges of the uppermost prairie points. Glue it in place.
- Tie the ends of the decorative cord in a bow to make a hanging loop. Attach the bow to the ornament with a pin or glue.

Almost all the ornaments on my Christmas tree are handmade – about 120 handmade ornaments
Between the kiddos and my mom’s stained glass ornaments, probably 2/3 are handmade!
I’m going to guess that I have about 2 dozen handmade ornaments on my tree 😀 I’ll be bringing up the box tomorrow so now I have to count to see, LOL!
Good question, a wild guess is 40-50 ornaments are handmade, but not all were made by me.
Almost every tree in my house has homemade ornaments… even some from the kids school days..they still like to see them hanging on the tree… and show their children what they made when they were little… Homemade ornaments have such a feel good feeling…I probably have in the 100’s and still make something to hang each season…
We have a few that were hand made, but not by me. I hope to change that soon!
I think about 15 this year.
Pretty close to 100, we’re a pretty crafty family.
Right now I only have about a dozen, Apparently I didn’t get custody of the Christmas Ornaments in the divorce, but with 5 grandkids it will fill up fast. Happy Crafting!
At least 50 because they are ones my children made when they were young and then there are a lot from friends.
I have about 20 handmade ornaments on my tree.
All of my ornaments are hand made by the kids.
Only a few, those made by my son while he was in elementary school. This is the first year I’m going to try to quilt/sew anything for the tree.
I am sad to say that there are no hand made ornaments on our Christmas tree.
I would say half the ornaments are homemade. My mother did most of them so the family has lots of memories.
I only have 5. 3 my daughter made, 1 family ornament and 1 cloth diaper ornament!
About 60. I saved all the ones my children have made, add to those to the ones I have made and that’s a lot!!!
I made my first handmade ornaments this year after the birth of my daughter
I only have about 6 special handmade ornaments.
I think I have about 2 or 3 dozen handmade ornaments on my tree. Some are made from seashells, some from pine cones, and some from other materials.
I have about 12 homemade ornaments on my tree.
I only have about 10 that are not handmade on my tree this year. Most were made by my 5 kids and myself as we make more each year.
20ish!
Maybe a dozen all made by my children over the years!
one handmade one
I have about 6 that were made by my children and I and that I will cheer forever. I need to win so I can afford to make so many more beautiful ones
Only about a dozen this year.
So far only about 4! Hoping to make more soon!
close to 20
I don’t do trees anymore, but I have a nice home maid wreath,
many they make such nice gifts, my sister took all her glass old fashioned decorations off her tree and replaced them with hand made ones
Too many to count! Some of my favorites are the ones my grandparents made me when I was a kid. They are wooden. Grandpa cut out the wood shape, and Grandma painted them. It was also a sweet memory to discover the ornaments my daughter has made and to remember the occasion when she made them.
goodness prob about 50
Their are about 20 handmade ornaments on my tree. About half of them are from my first year of marriage when we had a dinky fake tree and nothing to put on it so I made ornaments and strung popcorn as a garland to decorate it. The other half are plaster ornaments I have had the kids make for me over the last few years.
I have a few special ornaments that were made by my sister who passed away, and some made by me. I
will be making more soon.
We have about 20 handmade ornaments, and all are cherished. We will also be adding more this year, including the praire points pinecone!
there are probably 10 handmade ones on there
12
At least half, probably 40, all handmade from kids and grand kids.
7
Only 4 but, I love them! Thanks for the 12 Days of Christmas!
I am going to say about 20.
We only have about a dozen but I am hoping to change that this year.
There are just 3 homemade ornaments on our small tree
About 30
There are no hand made ornaments on my tree.
almost all
I have 3, one from each of my children.
Hmmmm… good question! We decoarated the tree 2 nights ago, so I am guessing that there are 20 – 25 homemade decorations on the tree and I love each one to bits… especially the ones the kids made when they were young!!
All of them, I love homemade ornaments, some very old, keep them year after year
I have at least three dozen. Many of them I have made and the others were made by my fellow crafting friends. We exchange ornaments every year and not just at Christmas time.
I have 150 handmade ornaments.I made fleece and 100% cotton Christmas tree
All most all of the ornaments on our Christmas tree are handmade by our two kids. The only non-handmade ornaments are their 1st Christmas ornaments we bought when they were babies.
I have three dozen hand crocheted angels on my tree.
about 43
My tree is full of happy memories of Christmases-past and the wonderful people who have contributed to its beauty. A wild guess for the number of ornaments on my tree would be around 60+ since I’m now 85 and have been making/giving/receiving Xmas decorations for most of these years. These beautiful ornaments hold happy memories of the people who have made these gifts. Each year I make and donate an ornament to all around me with a wish for yet another happy year ahead.
I think there are about 8 or 10 handmade ornaments on our tree. A friend and I made ornaments for a 4 foot tall tree every year for 12 years–it was donated to a holiday festival in NY an auctioned off (proceeds benefited United Cerebral Palsy). No time to make our own ornaments for many years as we were planning and making all the trees for charity!
I estimate that 2 dozen are hand made.
This pinecone ornament show how creativity people think.
Our tree has about 25 handmade ornaments mixed with the standard bought ornaments. The handmade ornaments find their way to the front and the bought ornaments are used to fill in the empty spots. We will have a little one in the family in the near future so the next handmade ornament will be a snowman family made by putting white paint on the hand and pressing it around the colored ball. A prairie point pinecone ornament similar to todays featured project was made for me as a gift many years ago only it was made out of ribbon. Todays project will be a fun project to try as well.
Actually none. We don’t have our tree up yet.
one. maybe. stepfather got the tree Sunday.
I would have to guess around 100 or more.
I would have to say almost 1/2. Would have more if I would stop giving or selling all that I make lol
a lot…way too many to count 🙂
I have at least 45 hand made ornaments. Looking forward to making more with my grandchildren
Most all,
along with the gifted ornaments for the kids. So much fun to go down memory lane every time we decorate the tree!
Theres about 14 on our tree this year
We just found 6 ornaments that my mother crocheted in a cousin’s closet. So I now have 6 handmade ornaments.
I just counted and we have 5.
I have 25 handman ornaments on my lovely tree this year!
About half of my Christmas tree ornaments are homemade, including 6 felt/bead stockings that I made just after my son was born 38 years ago. I also have a hand-painted ceramic snowflake given to me by a special 3-year-old girl to me as her Sunday School teacher. Merry Christmas everyone!
There are a lot. When we were first married 31 years ago I made a whole bunch and they have still survived plus my Mother – in -law has made some, the kids have made some and last year when my sisters and I got together we each brought an idea for an ornament and then made them together. We are a crafty family.
I know who made 4 of the ornaments on my tree, so my answer is 4. Thanks.
My husband is an artist & we are both very sentimental, so the majority of our ornaments are handmade. I’d estimate about 50 & going strong 🙂
I don’t know exactly. Probably most of them.
I have about 4 that my son made in school when he was little
Probably 15-20 handmade from kids
I don’t have any handmade ornaments.
About a dozen. Most of them made by my kids – some by my Mom.
maybe 15 from when the 4 kids were smaller – nice memories
About 12
Around 15 or 20. I have nearly all the ornaments the children made me in school when they were small and I have several that the kids and I made together.
Don’t have a tree as yet.
Probably abut 25
Probably around 40 on our tree.
I have 12 ornaments that my niece and nephews have made.
several hundred I think. More than 75% have been handmade in the last 40 years.
I have about 20 – if they are all on, but al going to make some of these. Not sure how many I’ll get done for this year. will continue making them for next year so will have more. Would make nice gifts to.
All the ornaments on all three of my trees are handmade. Some of them were made by my children when they were young and I have kept them carefully wrapped and stored each year to eventually hand down to them when they have their own families so that they can continue the tradition in with their children. Always so much fun making them with my children and now on my own.
At least 10, all lovingly made by my mom.
I’d say at least a dozen!
A few dozen. I’d say about about 1/3 to 1/2 the trees are hand made that are on my tree.
At least 4 dozen – It’s all I put on.
at least 12 or 13:) I think
maybe 6
I won’t have a tree, but most of my decorations are homemade, so it’ll probably be about 25.( amycaldwell at swva dot net)
I have a about 5 home made ornaments on my tree! My son made them in grade school and I hope my granddaughter continues this tradition. Thanks
tdkcarpenoctem@hotmail.com
on our actual tree none this year. i should really make some! or hang some.
On my tree there are none but my parent’s tree is the holder of our handmade journey. There are at least a hundred going back decades and now include a new generation.
We haven’t decorated our tree yet but we have about 25 hand made ornaments. They bring back some great memories.
I won’t be putting up a tree, but I’ve kept the ornaments my kids made in school when they were small.
We probably have a few handmade ornaments on our tree.
about 10 from the kids
This has become a family tradition. Each year I gather all the grandchildren, nieces, great nieces, nephews, cousins, and children of friends, and teach them the new ornament for that year. Along with the ornaments, we make cookies, eat all kinds of foods, watch Christmas movies and take plenty of pictures to post on the family website. This years theme is’ An old fashion Christmas”, with all of the original colors of red and green. Everyone adores this time and are always eager to know next year’s theme. Fun times with the family….
We have about 5 on the tree but a town under the tree. I was living in Dunoon, Argyle Scotland and hand made the homes, church and shops, out of thin wood and cardboard. Then designed a platform for the town with lights sticking up through the wood to shine of of the windows of the buildings. The tree fit in a hole in the center. But nothing made with fabric
I have about 50 handmade ornaments: beaded, sewn, painted. I love to see them each year! and usually add a few more 🙂
I lost my ornaments after last Christmas. I camcan remember where the box got put! So this year I had to buy new lights and replacement ornaments or have a naked tree 🙁
I think that over a 100 ornaments are on my tree
Haven’t put the tree up yet but I know I only have 4 or 5 handmade ones that I’ve had for years.
We usually put up 4 trees, but will only put up 2 this year. Almost all the ornaments and decorations around the house are handmade.
About 20 — most of the ones my children made, I have returned to them for their trees.
I have all my daughter’s ornaments made in preschool, school and at home with me, there are 21. I am now making ornaments with my Granddaughter and cherish this tradition.
around 50 I would say thanks for offering
Over one hundred.
There are well over 350 handmade ornaments on our tree. Some are large 4″ to 6″ (including a wooden airplane made by my father in the 60s and a yarn and plastic mesh gingerbread house by me). Most are smaller and range from hand-painted and glitter accented 3-D wooden ornaments to more than 100 bead and pipe cleaner icicles and candy canes. There are 18 felt animals made by my mother-in-law for our tree in 1973 plus the dozens more she made since, as well as the ornaments the children made in kindergarten. It is easier to count the “store-bought” ornaments (12, plus the lights and garlands) since it was my tradition to hand-make at least one ornament (usually a dozen or more) every year. We have an old trunk for the artificial tree and 4 medium-size totes to hold the entire collection. It takes me more than a week to put everything up – but much longer to take it all back down and put it away.
I have 30 handmade ornaments.
The whole tree!
I probably have about a dozen handmade ornaments on my tree.
About half of the ornaments on our tree are handmade 🙂
Right now none… all the ones we made from the time the kids were little where giving to the kids now that that are grown up with kids of their own. Now they make their own.
Only about 15 percent are handmade , but 90 percent of them have special meanings
Wish I had more homemade ornaments. Have just a couple but want to take time to make one for the family every year. If I start now, I’ll may be ready for 2015!
All the ornaments are hand made except for three – they gifts from special people.
All are hand made except for three – they gifts from special friends.
Probably 6
I would say at that there are at least 100 handmade ornaments on our tree. We hand-painted many of them, and there were a lot of additions from our children and other family members over the years.
I have probably 25 or so, many of them older than I am as I inherited all my mother’s and grandmother’s ornaments
We have about fifty handmade ornaments on our tree.
I don’t have any ornaments on my tree at all.
Not that many! Maybe only one or two!?
we have around 30 handmade ornaments on our tree
We have one entire tree decorated with handmade ornaments. We add to it every year.
On my two Christmas trees this year are ALL Hand Make Christmas decorations – I have a 14 month old little one sharing the Christmas trees and her first year Christmas trees. She LOVES the trees.
there are probably ten or so!
About 10 are handmade.
There arn’t any homemade ornaments on the tree.
I think I have about 10 handmade ornaments on the Christmas tree this year. some I made and some were handmade by my mother and mother-in-law, who are now deceased and bring back happy memories and remind me of them. How blessed my husband and I are to have such remembrances each year.
Hmm, I would bet about 45.
All the ornaments’ on our tree are handmade and most of them are gifts. I was a preschool teacher for about 28 years and they are made by children’s mothers. Very meaningful when I decorate each year.
