12 Days of Christmas

Today’s Project

On the seventh day of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, my true love gave to me … Robbing Peter To Pay Paul Quilt from Leisure Arts!

Robbing Peter To Pay Paul Quilt

MATERIALS

Yardage is based on 43″/44″w fabric.

  • 75/8 yds of black print (see PDF for example)
  • 47/8 yds of tan print (see PDF for example)
  • 25/8 yds of black solid (see PDF for example)
  • 8 yds for backing
  • 1 yd for binding
  • 120″ x 120″ batting
  • transparent monofilament thread for appliqué
  • 12 yds of 171/4″w paper-backed fusible web
  • tear-away fabric stabilizer

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS

All measurements include a 1/4″ seam allowance. Borders include extra length for “insurance”; trim borders after measuring completed center section of quilt top. Click here download Robbing Peter to Pay Paul Quilt templates and additional instructions.

  1. From black print:
    1. Cut 9 strips 91/2″w, cut 36 squares from these
      strips, 91/2″ x 91/2″.
    2. Cut 37 strips 2″w.
    3. Cut 2 lengthwise strips 51/2″ x 80″ for top/bottom outer borders.
    4. Cut 2 lengthwise strips 51/2″ x 99″ for side outer borders.
  2. From tan print:
    1. Cut 37 strips 2″w.
    2. Cut 9 strips 91/2″w. From these strips, cut 36 squares 91/2″ x 91/2″.
  3. From black solid:
    1. Cut 2 lengthwise strips 21/4″ x 89″ for side inner borders.
    2. Cut 2 lengthwise strips 21/4″ x 76″ for top/bottom inner borders.

SEWING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Sew 8 squares together to make Row. Make 9 Rows.801472_Q_Robbing_Peter-2-Rowmake9
  2. Sew Rows together to make Center Section of quilt top.
    801472_Q_Robbing_Peter-2-CenterSec
  3. Sew strips together to make Strip Set. Make 32 Strip Sets.
    801472_Q_Robbing_Peter-2-stripSet
  4. (Note: White or light-colored fabrics may need to be lined with fusible interfacing before applying fusible web to prevent darker fabrics from showing through.)  Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse web to wrong sides of Strip Sets and remaining strips. Remove paper backing.
  5. Follow Step 1 of Template Cutting, found here.
  6. Referring to Step 2 of Template Cutting (found on page 6 of the downloadable PDF) and placing center line of template on seamline, use Template A to cut 127 A’s from Strip Sets (Fig. 1). Use Template B to cut 17 B’s from remaining black print strips and 17 B’s from remaining tan print strips. Find templates and instructions here.
    801472_Q_Robbing_Peter-2-fig1Pencil
  7. Referring to Fig. 2, follow Invisible Appliqué, page 6, to stitch A’s over seamlines of Center Section and to stitch B’s at outside edges of outer squares.
    801472_Q_Robbing_Peter-3Fig2b
  8. Sew top, bottom, then side inner borders to Center Section. Add top, bottom, then side outer borders to complete Quilt Top.
  9. Mark, layer, and quilt, using Quilting Diagram (found on page 3 of the downloadable PDF)  as a suggestion. Our quilt is machine quilted.
  10. Bind quilt as desired.

I like easy patterns because I am a total beginner at quilting. I have a month old great grandson and his dad, my grandson, has asked me to make him a quilt. I want to have it done for Christmas but cannot start until the 20th so it will be a big challenge for me.

Both! I did my first two quilts at the same time…one was very difficult (which was the one my friend was teaching me how to do) and the other was simple. While waiting for my next instructions on the difficult one I worked on the easy one because I was really enjoying the sewing process. Needless to say that is how I got hooked on sewing!

But when I just want something fun, I go to little nine patches or four patches or just make a bunch of HST’s to arrange in a fun fashion. Thanks for asking!

Since I’ve only been sewing for a year, all quilts present enough of a challenge to keep me interested. I think it depends what mood I’m in. If I want to zone out and forget the day I do something I’ve done before and don’t have to think about too much, but sometimes I’m in the mood to learn, so I pick something with more of a challenge.

More recently it has been with foundation piecing, which is quite quite challenging. After doing something complex, I like a bit of a breather and do something easy for charity. I like to mix it up.

I like both types of quiltmaking. You cannot grow as a quilter if all of your projects are easy and some of the more spectacular quilts (i.e. Judy Niemeyer) are challenging. We learn new skills when we work on challenging quilts.

I’m going for easy quilts nowadays because I’ve let myself fall behind with the quilts I gift to new babies in our family and among my good friends. But since I’m also using up my stash (a la Bonnie Hunter), they are still very interesting.
However, I do love a challenge now and then.

I enjoy making quilts that provide me with an opportunity to try new techniques or to use fabrics and textures in new ways. So each quilt I make usually presents me with at least one new challenge. (But I don’t like making quilts that present me with multiple challenges at the same time. That’s a recipe for disaster…and for frustration!)

I love to do both. See I have had MS since I was a senior in high school so now at 33 I have it progressive. If I’m not feeling as well and slow I do the easy stuff because MS can take a lot out of me but I have a mother who lives with me and 2 boys who helps me as well. When I’m having a good day I do love to challenge myself and go out of my comfort zone because this, quilting I absolutely love to quilt and believe it or not I taiyght myself how to sew because I thought it would be great for a like physical therapy. The one thing I never realized what would happen is how much I have grown to love it whether it be both easy or challenging their both great and fun to do. Thank you for having this contest and giving somebody a chance even if it probably won’t be me lol I think they’ll have a lot of fun with your pattern books¡!¡!

I usually make an easy quilt since I’m one that doesn’t like to have a project going on forever. I make quilts for each grandchild that graduates so I’m usually waiting until crunch time to start it. I can’t wait to see the finished quilt so that’s another reason I like fast and easy quilts. I have done harder ones but before I’m finished I find myself getting bored and vow never to do another one. This idea works until I get the notion to make another quilt.
