The White On White Log Cabin Quilt Block

January 18, 2019 by Carolyn

Hello out there in quilting land. Carolyn Wainscott here to share one of my quilts. Maybe a white on white log cabin quilt block doesn’t sound very exciting or interesting but I had one on my bucket list for quite some time before the actual work began. The quilt even had its own name from it’s inception- “My Mansion In The Sky, Crystal River Running By”. Ok-I know-hokey but the white on white quilt turned out just as I had envisioned and I love log cabins, both wood and fabric.

White on white prints were added to my stash every chance I got while fabric shopping until there were enough and until my mood kicked in. My mood-that’s a biggy-how about you?

Here is a finished 12″ block in the quilt:

all blocks weren’t the same-I just created as the mood [there it is again] hit

Getting fabrics ready:

Here is the fantastic white on white print I found with large roses that was fussy cut for the center of each block.

then smaller prints

laces were also added-the lace strips had strips of white muslin underneath

The fabrics were cut into 2 1/2″ strips,

and put into this basket with pins, thread, needles and scissors. It was kept by my chair and a lot of the blocks were hand pieced as I watched tv at night. It was also carried with me to the hospital so I could work on the white on white log cabin quilt blocks during my husband’s hospital stays.

A queen size quilt was made from The White on White Log Cabin quilt blocks by adding sashing cut from satin. I know satin isn’t a traditional fabric to use but I wanted a shimmery, watery look for the waves created with my machine quilting.

Here is a cutting and piecing guideline:

HHmmmm! I wonder what a blue on blue log cabin block would look like? Or how elegant and classy a silver to gray/black would be? The bucket list just got longer.

I hope you enjoy quilting and sewing as much as I do,

Carolyn Wainscott
